Kónya-szék of Csongrád

Area: 485 ha

Legal declaration by Decree No. 26/1998. KTM

Biogeographic region: Sand Ridge

The Kónya-szék of Csongrád is a periodically water-covered saline depression amidst the gentle loess dunes of the Kiskunság Loess Ridge, located in the north-eastern part of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. This reserve still carries the characteristic geomorphology and wildlife of saline habitats. Its flora is typical of saline steppes, while higher elevations host fragments of loess grasslands. If there is enough precipitation in autumn and winter, depressions fill up with water. In spring, Black-tailed Godwits, Common Redshanks and other shorebirds populate the area. The reserve is not barren in winter either as Common and Rough-legged Buzzards can frequently be seen while hunting for voles.
